Social Security Disability Insurance

What is Social Security Disability Insurance? This is one of the programs covered by the taxes of workers, collected by the Social Security Administration (SSA). This program is available to adults and children determined to be “disabled” by the Disability Determinations Services (DDS) of the SSA. Every state has a DDS with different application review times or “backlogs”, but the requisites and the definition of a disability are the same nationwide.

SSA’s definition of a disability is, “inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity (SGA) because of a medically-determinable physical or mental impairment(s): That is expected to result in death or that has lasted (or is expected to last) for a continuous period of at least 12 months.”

Those who are determined to be disabled by SSA receive a monthly benefit payment. The amount of this payment is different for each person as SSA uses a complex formula to calculate the benefits of each person. Once an individual receives benefit payments, in 24 months they will be eligible for Medicaid or Medicare.

You should apply for disability as soon as you have become injured. If you are ready to apply now, you can:
